The Gun, Docklands: A smugglers hideaway in E14

Hidden down a cobbled street in the heart of the Docklands is an ex smuggler’s hole and gem of a pub that only those in the know know…

The good news is that it is only a short bus or cycle ride for roaming E6-ers interested in investigating the rest of Newham.

250 years serving beer to smugglers. Now serving Bloody Marys to hipsters…

The Gun has been open in various pub guises for over 250 years and is a gloriously snug grade 2 listed building. It is everything a pub on the river should be (all mahogany tables, open fires and pictures of big ships on the walls) – a nice balance of proper boozer and a pinch of fancy pants.  They pull a lovely pint, have a range of casket ales and craft beer (we have listed a few below). If the mood takes you, they do cocktails too – It was bloody mary o-clock when we visited and they had a jug set up on the bar with all the trimmings.

The restaurant serves posh nosh (hens eggs and Roast Rabbit for Sunday lunch at £17 a pop, I tell you!) but bar food is available for the riff raff (traditional sausage rolls, scotch eggs and whitebait starting from a fiver… nom nom nom). We didn’t try the food this time, but it looked AMAZING albeit, only for a  special treat at those prices. If you try it, don’t forget to tell us about it…

The best thing about this place is terrace & conservatory out the back, which backs right on the river. Kick back, watch the water flow and look out over super views of the 02.

Ok Ok , we know it is not actually in East Ham, but is still in our neck of the woods so put it in your ‘adventure’ folder for days when you fancy exploring further afield. This place is a definite winner for summer days and birthday treats… The staff are excellent and know their bombardier from their beaujolais, the building is a beaut and who doesn’t like a beer on the river?
