Lucky us and lucky you, dear readers… A few weeks back, as part of our ‘Local Talent’ series, we grabbed a coffee with local legend, head chef at Bow’s Vinarius (on Roman Road) and creator of East Ham’s own Bread Club, Sophie Downer-Hill.
While she held the EastBlam baby (see him yawning in the pic above!), we talked some serious sourdough, community baking and what it was like to work for the Queen (yep, Sophie has brushed pastry and trimmed crusts for our very own HRH). We grilled her hard on plans for the future and whether an East Ham bakery was on the cards any time soon. Scroll down for the full interview – Errr, wait, make a cuppa first and if you are in Bread Club (first rule of bread club, is um… um…) grab a slice of Sophie’s super sourdough toast while you are at it!
First there was the good enough to eat instagram feed – all brightly coloured yummy looking choccie’s covered in sparkles and rose petals and pretty things and hashtagged as #eastham. We used the heart eyed emoji to respond (Natch). Then there was the surprise encounter at the last Greatfield Market with a stall selling beautifully crafted chocolates. All these clues point to one thing… ARTISAN CHOCOLATE MADE IN EAST HAM!
That’s right, E6 now has its very own artisan chocolatier selling online and at local markets…. East Blam caught up with Cocoa Bocoa to talk East Ham hang outs (The Grill, on High Street North gets a thumbs up), Sustainable cocoa, the best chocolate to have with your coffee and flavour combinations that have been quite literally dreamt up. We also got taste a few of their favourite flavours too. Market research, we assure you, dear readers… we only do it for the story #properjournalists.
Scroll down for the full interview (you are going to love it, these guys are totes profesh), and our ‘review’ (ok, we’ll tell you now, we go all out with the full five stars!).
So, East Ham… We’ve got the best curry for miles around, cool art gallery, an independent bookshop, billions of parks and green spaces, and old victorian houses. #winning.
What don’t we got? Bread.
Well, we are about to change all that, with the introduction of Flour and Spoon, and their utterly divine bread; Stone baked, Sourdough, Multi-seed. You want it, they got it, from Marmite cheese scones, to Cream cheese and Rosemary sourdough, right down to your classic white sandwich loaf.
As some of you already know, our favourite East-Ham-artists- hidey-hole (Red Door Studios, duh!) is planning a 7 day exhibition on the impact of Brexit on locals and artists alike, called reACT.
It kicks off with a bang on 3rd September with an all day LIVE ART & MUSIC-ATHON (quick, get it in your diary or click here for the Facebook event.) and we’ve got the insider scoop from some of the artists! Yep, that’s right, investigative journalism, right here people…
What, another muso in our midst???
Musical bunch, the far easties. Just 5 minutes ago we were here chatting about that there Gaptooth, and now it turns out there is another superb and over talented instrumentalist among us.
Remember Mr LJA Brown? Yes, the one you saw at Red Door the other night with the big beard…played a storming set followed by some serious northern soul, yeah, that one…
Get your ears around this!
More on the HOME GROWN TALENT FRONT, this time from electro pop princess Gaptooth (AKA Hannah Lucy) who is about to self released her new EP (which was mixed by Oli Horton of Dreamtrak fame) and hails from the East Edge! We say get Sound Cloud open, load up this bad boy and have listen and see what she has got to say for herself…
Quirky, crafted animations from this East Ham based duo, who love triangular shaped cheese.
The second instalment of our HOME GROWN TALENT feature is about the most excellent and totally bodacious CATFISH COLLECTIVE. This animation duo have a studio up at Napier Works, run by Artcore International (in the upper east side of East Ham, just above Flanders playing fields) and have worked with Nike, BBC, Unilever and Gucci among others. Big league stuff, yeah!
Their beautiful, perfectly crafted and quirky work cannot fail to make you smile (unless you have a heart made of stone or have turned to the dark side of the force) and when you read their interview we are sure that you will love them even more. We are certainly very proud to say that we live in the same piece of Ham as they do, AND AND AND they are planning a film night in collaboration with Red Door Studios soon, Yippee!
Anyway, enough from us. Read all about it below (and the triangular cheese issue will all become clear!)…
A new feature on local talent, starting with psych rock and roll four piece Saint Agnes
This is the first of a new feature we have planned called HOME GROWN TALENT. Here we feature an interview on local East Blammers and Newhamites who are doing cool things about town. Artists; Musicians; Entrepreneurs; Local politicians; anyone we think the people of East Ham need to know about. First up, one of our favourite new bands, SAINT AGNES.
