It’s heeeeere! Finally after much anticipation and social media buzz, there is a new PUB in East Ham!
The arrival of East Ham gastropub The Red Lion (the artist formally known as The Hammers) will not be news to many of you. It is probably THE most talked about opening of 2018 (and 2017 for that matter). Twitter and Facebook were a buzz with excitement before the grand opening and any of you who follow the Manor Park E12 & East Ham E6 Facebook page, read the East Edge mag or follow the lovely folks at Greatfield Residents Association will have been all over this like a rash. For those of you who don’t, a) why the heck not? Get yourself hooked up to the E6 grapevine STAT (follow the links above!) and b) don’t worry, we’re gonna tell you all about it…
Awesomestow chain takes The Hammers back to former glory
The Red Lion can be found in prime position right by Central Park on High Street South and is run by those clever folks who have already made an impression on Awsomestow’s Dog and Duck. They also have the Lord Morpeth in Victoria Park Village to name a few.
Newbie Easties may not know it but this pub has been open since 1841 as the Red Lion. The name was changed to the Hammers in the late 1950’s (some say ‘57, some say ‘59) when West Ham United went up to the 1st division in the Premier League. There it stayed in all its claret-and-blue-sky-sports-and-no-away-fans glory, until now.
Traditional pub vibes with a winning beer garden
The brand spanking new Red Lion opened its doors on 3rd Feb to a flurry of excitement from locals. Much to our delight, the whole place has been renovated with traditional pub vibes – all vintage wood and trinkets (the landlord knows his history and the decor is carefully curated to reflect that). The crowning glory is the huge garden with painted white bricks and picnic tables in the sunny spots as well as squishy undercover sofas and outdoor heaters (perfect for the chilly English evenings). #winning
Craft Beer, Cocktails, Sourdough Pizza, a banging Sunday Roast!
One of the only pubs in East Ham to offer food, these guys serve sourdough pizza (yeeeeehaaaaaaa!) all week, a banging Sunday Roast (no photo I am afraid – we snaffled it up before we could take any), great burgers and a steak night on a Thursday.
Of course it’s a pub so they have booze. The Red Lion offers craft beer on tap, a range of cocktails (epic Bloody Mary’s for those who need a hair of the dog) and an indie gin selection to make a mother weep (because it’s mothers ruin, geddit, geddit?). And if you are on the wagon, they serve a great coffee from Leyton’s Perky Blenders.
Family friendly and well run. What’s not to love
The staff are friendly, the place is run in ship shape and on top of that it’s family friendly, allowing the kiddiewinks in to share the fun up to 7pm.
So, what’s not to love? We say get your table booked for Sunday grub, or hot foot it down there right now to show your support – it’s the one non footie fans have all been waiting for.
