The King of Burgers at Rustix Gourmet, Barking Road, E6

January is on it’s way, so before you descend into diets, and resolution get yourself down to the newest (and most heavily PR’d) Burger joint in East Ham – Rustix Gourmet. Open barely a few months, and a serious contender for the most instagrammed burger in the Far East{London}, Rustix Gourmet is going for the gold gong of Americana. They serve burgers, mac and cheese, chicken and steak on chipboard tables, and in tin plates. They take their theme so seriously that they were even playing some old bluegrass and delta blues tunes when we visited (#winning). This is not your average East Ham eatery…

Fancy burgers and fancy decor

Rustix is a gourmet burger joint, which would be right at home next to a Byron Burger or such like. The only difference being that this one is on Barking Road, East Ham AKA just a round the corner!! It is a bit of a novelty to have fandango burgers in E6, an area where South Indian food has long been the reigning cuisine champion and Rustix are doing a cracking job. The meat is halal, the burgers are authentic and the interior is well done – the space is airy but cosy with cute americana touches, plush benches and booths to hide in. We sat downstairs where the vibe is intimate and easy going. There are signs on the kitchen door telling us to eat more chicken (they are so right, as the Chicken burger was literally the winner winner chicken dinner), tin signs to help you visualise the menu and low hanging trendy Edison light bulbs.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

The menu has everything you might expect. Overwhelmingly so. From a range of quirkily named burgers, to half chicken’s, surf and turf and big fat steaks. Sides and toppings are equally forth coming and if you don’t already feel your cholesterol level rising in anticipation, the milkshakes sound quite something. We really wanted an Oreo shake, but seeing as December is the month of overindulgence, we had to draw a line somewhere…

We went for burgers. Beef, and Chicken. And boy, did the chicken win. Don’t get us wrong, the Rustix Bandit Burger fought bravely – all sweet Brioche, tender beefy goodness and yummy melty cheese, but the Southwest Chicken in a bun nailed it, hard. We did add an additional topping of Jalapeños to the serve which packed the right kind of punch but the chicken was just nom-nom-nom-able, with it’s coleslaw combo. Mmmmmmmm. Chicken.

For sides, we stuck with ole favourites of Onion rings and Rosemary cheesy fries. Much to our surprise (and delight), the cheesy fries were with cheese sauce not cheddar making them fit perfectly somewhere between chips and mac and cheese.

So far, so American.

No room for pudding? Have a Mojito instead…

We didn’t have room for desert but we did notice pancakes on the menu, with an array of sides and sauces to ensure that you had the perfect sweet sweet sugary high (next time we promise – if you’ve tried it, chuck us a comment below to tell us if it was good) but we should wax lyrical for a moment about the Mojito.

Before you get your hopes up, Rustix is not a licensed venue, so these Mojito’s were of the virgin variety – no booze in here (perfect for January – Guy’s it’s ok to disregard the diet as long as you stay dry, right?) but it was a most excellent choice. The House special Mojito comes with added pomegranate and pineapple juice. We won’t lie, it is pretty darn sweet, but fresh and fruity too.

Good food, but don’t forget to get some cash out on the way

All in all, Rustix ticks the right boxes. The staff are super friendly, the food is good solid junk food with a fancy twist and it is just around the corner so we strongly recommend that you get yourself down to Rustix in the next few days, to tide you over until Jan 31st.

Diners should note that it is currently cash only so make sure you plan ahead.
