A literary treasure trove! This independent Bookshop is worth exploring.
We dropped in on Newham Bookshop this weekend. What we found made us SMILE!
Founded in 1978, Newham Book Shop has been in East Ham / Upton Park since before the BBC broadcast its first episode of EastEnders and before Hackney had seen its first hipster! Oh if walls could talk! Glorious and unassuming, it houses the usual blockbusters, plenty of indie scrits and wide range of academic texts (social studies, politics, history) if you dig deep within the shelves.
Nestled in on Barking road, there are two sides to this book shop’s story. The higgledy piggledy grown up side where you could lose yourself for many hours (maybe even days) lovingly leafing through the staff recommendations, and the children’s side, strewn with bunting and creative cladding. The store seriously appeals to those who want a literary exploration, for those who love to rummage.
Events and community spirit too?
As if that wasn’t enough, they also seem to be a huge part of the east end community, holding talks with authors, working with local schools and their libraries and this year hosting World Book day. The noticeboard is a hive of cool local activities and groups and they sell tickets for events at Forest Gate’s Coffee7, and Wanstead Tap.
All it needs now is a comfy coffee shop next door, and Saturday mornings would be COMPLETE!
